SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Tracy Moreno, a senior at Cedar Grove High School, was honored on Sunday at the “National Girls and Women In Sports Day” at Seton Hall University.
Moreno, who plays lacrosse and runs cross-country for CGHS, was nominated for the award by her coaches and the CGHS administration. Only one girl from each school is selected each year. The award is given by the National Girls and Women in Sports program, which recognizes outstanding high school and college female athletes who show athletic excellence, a commitment to community service, and academic success.
A three-year varsity starter, Moreno was the first girl in CGHS lacrosse history to reach 100 points and 100 goals, and currently holds the school record for points. She has been named to divisional and SEC All-Star teams for the past three years. She will kick off her senior season in March, serving as captain for the second year.
The National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) began in 1987 as a special day to recognize women’s sports. The day united premiere organizations and elite female athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. NGWSD has since evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
Editor's Note: Tracy Moreno is the daughter of TAPintoVCG editor Jeanne Moreno
