CHATHAM, NJ - Members of the Chatham Cougar football team reunited with students of the ECLC school recently. This time, the purpose was not for a casual practice, but for a competitive game of basketball.
After a strong comeback by the Cougars in the fourth period, the Tigers managed to secure a 43-36 victory. It was a hard-fought game on both ends, but the Tigers’ good ball movement, shutdown defense and effective offense were too much for the football team turned basketball squad.
Senior and now former co-captain of the football team, Scott Lynch, was one of the six Cougar football players to play in the game. When asked why he did it, Lynch said that he, “Wanted to participate to see the (ECLC) students again from when we played football with them during the fall. I had so much fun with them and wanted to have that kind of experience again.”
The fundraising game proved to be more than exciting, as close to one hundred fans packed the ECLC gym to watch the contest. Starting lineups were announced, official jerseys were worn and in-game music was played. In addition, official NJSIAA high school referees were there to call the game fairly for both sides.
The four eight-minute periods proved to be too much for the Cougars, as the Tigers were ready to go from the opening tip. The entire team, top to bottom, contributed to the victory. The Tigers had excellent rebounders and passers to complement their long-range and lay-up shooters.
One key to the Tigers’ success was their teamwork and support of one another. “After a missed shot or a successful one, they are always making each other better. I love that about them,” added Lynch. With every shot made, the crowd would erupt and a smile would be on every face in the gym, whether it be a Tiger’s, Cougar’s or fan’s.
“It is such a good thing to do and is very fun and gets them out to play. It is really moving to see how much they love us coming down and playing with them.”
Hopefully, the Cougars and Tigers continue doing these activities together. Their success and joy that they bring to so many is tremendous.
