CHATHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ - The 2013 proposed budget was topic of discussion for Thursday night’s Chatham
Township Committee meeting, and for the third consecutive year, there will be no increase in local taxes.
Tom Ciccarone, township administrator, gave a detailed overview of the budget, providing the committee with insight into where the town's tax money goes. Roughly 19 percent of the township’s tax revenue goes towards paying for various insurance costs. It was commented that heath care coverage for township’s employees is the only cost that seems to have a steady annual increase, even though it is slight.
Additionally, the township pays for a larger potion of the taxes related to the Library of the Chathams, shared with the borough. Part of the involved formula that calculates this tax figure, take into consideration the larger population of the township over the borough. Likewise, a similar formula calculates the taxes for both towns in relation to the school board. The number of students that are in attendance in the joint district is nearly 50/50. However, the township makes up of 58 percent of the district’s taxes.
Labor expenses for the township were expected to increase by 1.75 perrcent in 2013 and 2014. Heath care expenses were also expected to increase by 12 percent in those years.
The budget has some room for the town’s wish list of improvements such as road improvements, DPW purchases, new equipment and support for the volunteer fire department and needed generators for various township buildings.
In other business, Mayor Nicole Hagner read a resolution in honor of former Chief of Police John Paton for his many years of service to the township. She also swore in new Chief Steven Hennelly.
There will be a public hearing on ordinance 2013-02, to amend liquor license fees, at the next township committee meeting on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
