Chatham Township Rated as the Safest Place to Live in New Jersey According to Recent FBI Statistics

CHATHAM, NJ - According to recent FBI statistics related to violent crimes the Township of Chatham is the safest place to live in New Jersey.

Grigson states in the article that there were zero violent crimes committed in Chatham Township in 2012 and only 46 property crimes committed that year.

Grigson explained that the criteria included towns with 10,000 or more residents. The statistics were divided into three categories: 1-Violent Crime such as rape, murder and assault. 2-Property Crime such as theft, burglary or motor vehicle crime. 3-The chance a resident would be the victim of a crime.

The statistics were weighted in importance. Grigson gave a 50 percent value to violent crime, 30 percent for property theft and 20 percent to the chance of being a victim. The total number of crimes in 2012 were 176,193, of which 86 percent were property crimes.

Here is the Top 10: 1-Chatham Township. 2-Mahwah and Sparta (tie). 4-Bernards Township. 5-Borough of Hasbrouck Heights. 6-Berkeley Heights. 7-Borough of Florham Park. 8-Borough of Ringwood. 9-Borough of Tenafly. 10-Borough of Lincoln Park.

According to the study, the top two most violent places to live in New Jersey are Asbury Park and Camden. Asbury Park has a population of 16,625 and there were 1,491 crimes committed there in 2012, 344 of them violent. Camden has 79,000 residents and suffered 1,841 violent crimes, including 37 murders.
