CHATHAM, NJ - In October, the Chatham Environmental Commission is joining forces with the Madison Environmental Commission in encouraging residents to go green by hosting individual yard sales on one common date at one common time. This is a first for Chatham Borough, following two previous successful events organized in Madison. To encourage participation, Chatham Borough Council will waive all usual permit requirements for the event.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 3 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

“Many of us have been taking advantage of COVID-19 restrictions to declutter our homes and to re-evaluate what items we really need and value. At the same time, some of our neighbors are struggling because of job loss and illness and shopping at a Town-Wide Yard Sale is a great way to pick up children’s clothes, school supplies, winter coats, snow boots and other household equipment,” says Councilwoman Jocelyn Mathieson, Borough Council liaison to the Chatham Borough Environmental Commission.

Because of COVID-19, she explains that all yard sale participants are being asked to follow some important guidelines: “Please wear masks, make hand sanitizer available at the tables, encourage contactless payment, and set up sales to facilitate social distancing.”

All homeowners are encouraged to put up street signs for their yard sales. In addition, they are invited to be part of a digital map that tells shoppers their addresses along with the type of merchandise offered.

Publication on the map is part of a partnership with TapIntoMadison.net. Listings are $10 each and will be published on TapInto Madison and TapInto Chatham, and on its sister sites for neighboring towns.

A Google Map with all the yard sale locations will be published on TapInto Madison and TapInto Chatham several days before the event and will be posted on the Facebook accounts for the Borough of Madison, Chatham Borough, GreenMadisonNJ and ChathamBoroughEnvironmentalCommission.

“This event is an easy and convenient way for our residents to sell and shop in an environmentally friendly way,” says Susie Robertson, Chatham Borough Environmental Commissioner. “We are working on several initiatives at the CBEC to encourage the reuse and repair of items, in addition to more traditional recycling programs. We encourage residents to sign up to host a Yard Sale rather than putting items into Bulk Pickup. Please hold off on disposing items on October 2nd, which are in good condition, clean and in working order, and host a sale on October 3rd instead.”

Many nonprofits stopped accepting donations of clothing and household items during the pandemic. Among those that have resumed pickups are the Vietnam Veterans of America (vva.org), the Lupus Foundation of America (Lupuspickup.org), GreenDrop (gogreendrop.com), the Market Street Mission (marketstreet.org) and Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore (morrisrestore.org/donate), which does some pickups and accepts antiques, furniture, flooring, brand new plumbing, painting supplies, doors and more.
