NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Chen's in New Providence has shut its doors for good. The restaurant, specializing in Chinese cuisine and Japanese sushi, closed during Hurricane Sandy and never reopened. While some residents thought that the restaurant would open again like other businesses in New Providence have, it has not done so and the owners and workers have not returned calls for comment.
Chen's gained unfortunate notoriety in New Providence in 2010 when it was the scene of a gruesome attempted suicide. Read about it here.
"For years, Chen's was the go-to place for Chinese food in New Providence," said New Providence Councilman Rob Munoz. "However, over the last couple of years, that started to change."
Munoz sees an upside, however, in Chen's departure.
"Chen's going out of business, I believe, is a game changer as far as the liquor license is concerned," he said. "Now we have a restaurant, that for the most part, is ready to go. It's a prime location, it offers outdoor seating, and has adequate parking. Add a liquor license to that, and I think you have a formula for success."
