LIVINGSTON, NJ – “A Gorgeous Spectacle: Chinese Opera 101” will be presented by Judith Zeitlin, professor of Chinese Civilization at the University of Chicago, at the Livingston Public Library, on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free to the public, no advance registration is required.
The program will include film clips and images from Prof. Zeitlin’s upcoming exhibition, “Performing Images: Opera in Chinese Visual Culture,” which opens Feb. 25 at the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago.
Chinese opera is much more than just an age-old form of musical theater. Its rich heritage of costumes, makeup, sets, characters and storylines continue to pervade all of the arts of the region--including, most recently, film.
