LINDEN, NJ - On Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m., the Linden City Council will vote on a resolution authorizing the execution of a redevelopment agreement.

The proposed redevelopment area, Block 254, Lots 1-10, spans from 7 North Wood Avenue to 27 North Wood Avenue and from 11‐15 West Elizabeth Avenue to 101 West Elizabeth Avenue. This space currently houses a QuickChek and several other businesses; it also serves as additional parking spaces for NJ Transit.  This plan has been in the works for over a year.

In June 2019, the City Council requested that the Planning Board look into the area. Three months later, the Planning Board confirmed the area has been deemed “in need of improvement” according to criteria outlined in the Redevelopment Law.

The redevelopment will materialize in one of two ways: In Scenario 1, the construction of a two six-story buildings consisting of retail space, ample parking, and approximately 500 residential units in total. Scenario 2 suggests one six-story mixed use building, ground-level parking with over 200 available spots, retail space and 300 residential units.

Linden has several apartment complexes and condominiums in near proximity to this location.

A few blocks south of the QuickChek on Wood Avenue are the Meridia Lifestyles Apartments. Additionally, there is currently a residential construction occurring on E. Elizabeth Avenue (across from American Legion), which was a stalled project from 2016 that has been recently resumed.

While both house considerably less rentable space than the proposed plan, both are still viable options for those looking to move into the city.

Linden City Council Meetings recur every third Tuesday of the month and are open to the public. Residents are now encouraged to join digitally via computer, tablet or smartphone by registering in advance. To register for the Tuesday, September 15 virtual meeting click here.
