Updated 3/1 with additional information about donating.

WESTFIELD, NJ — In honor of Women’s History month, the Westfield High School Treat People With Kindness Club is holding a drive to collect necessary items for women in need.

Run by the club’s two-year president, senior Alexa Cassiba, and advised by Westfield High School Spanish teacher, Paula Parada, the club is collecting item donations at multiple locations in Westfield and money donations through Venmo through to March 14.

The club is accepting donations of feminine products, lotion, body spray and deodorant. All donations will be distributed by the Mini Socialites Organization which supports children with disabilities and women in need.

“The goal of the Treat People With Kindness Club is to help as many people as we possibly can,” said Cassiba. “I personally believe that helping others is one of the best things that one can do with their life.”

In previous years, the club focused on international causes, such as collecting money through bake sales for children in the Philippines. The club founder and former president, Paula Palles, personally brought the donations along with other necessary items for school aged children to the Philippines. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club has shifted its efforts to more local causes.

“After some careful deliberation, we decided as a club that it would be best to pivot the direction of our club because everything changed with COVID,” said Cassiba. “We decided because it wouldn't be safe to raise money and travel that we would focus on helping people in our surrounding communities.”

Earlier this year, the club held a Toys for Tots drive to help children in need during the unconventional holiday season.

Cassiba said that being a part of the Treat People With Kindness Club has been one of the best experiences of her life.

“I am definitely going to miss being a part of something so wonderful once I graduate this spring,” she added.

To donate, drop off items at 132 Ferris Place, 783 Knollwood Terrace, 710 East Broad St. or Room 249 at Westfield High School. For more information, email lexicass2002@gmail.com or visit @treatpeoplewithkindnesswhs on Instagram.
