SAGE Eldercare has named Cocoa and John Catallo as their “Sweethearts of the Year” for 2013. For the Springfield residents, volunteering at SAGE began ten years ago.
Cocoa Catallo began volunteering at SAGE for Meals On Wheels in June 2003. At the time, she was retiring from the Springfield Public Library, where she had worked for nearly twelve years. Her love of driving and helping people led her to reach out to SAGE, along with her friend Mary Cameron, another Springfield resident. As time passed, her husband John joined her on many of the weekly meal deliveries to Springfield and Mountainside.
“We are very excited to name Cocoa and John as our 2013 Sweethearts of the Year,” stated Marianne Kranz, Director of Volunteer Services at SAGE. “This is not their first honor. During 2008, SAGE named ‘Cocoa’s Crew’ the volunteers of the month. The group included Cocoa and her husband John, Charlie and Mary Cameron, Mary Jane Lynskey, and Mary Corbett. Cocoa and John have been a solid team during the past ten years of weekly meal deliveries on Wednesdays,” she noted.
“We enjoy volunteering, especially at SAGE. Each year, we look forward to the volunteer luncheon and the staff is always appreciative of our help,” noted Cocoa Catallo. “John and I hope to be able to deliver Meals On Wheels for years to come.”
SAGE Eldercare supports the independence, well-being and quality of life of older adults, their families and caregivers, through the provision of client-centered health, social and support services. Founded in 1954, SAGE is one of the few non-profit eldercare agencies in the United States, and the oldest in New Jersey, that offers a broad and comprehensive array of services under one roof that assist elderly, often frail, adults to remain independent in their own homes.
Programs at SAGE Eldercare include: HomeCare; Meals On Wheels; Spend-A-Day Adult Day Health Center; GPS (Guidance Planning Support) Services; InfoCare free information and referral service; Fall Prevention Initiative; Home Repair Service; Grocery Shopping and Errand Service; Bill Paying Service; Holistic Living Services; Alzheimer’s and PREP caregiver support groups; Community Education; and Union County Medicare SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). In addition, SAGE has operated a Furniture Restoration Workshop, run by volunteers who specialize in caning and rushing chairs and refinishing furniture, and a Resale Shop for more than 50 years. Both provide essential funding that supports the organization’s programs and services for seniors in the community.
