PLAINFIELD, NJ — Queen City Coffee Roasters, a new specialty coffee house and roastery, is doubling down on Plainfield’s future. “People have been talking about Plainfield’s potential for as long as I can remember… but instead of waiting around for it, my wife, Monica, and I want to be a part of it,” explains Owner Maher Janajri.
Janajri grew up in nearby Warren, but spent most of his weekends in Plainfield because his parents owned businesses in town. “I was driving forklifts at my dad’s warehouse on Saturdays, and helping my mom with bookkeeping on Sundays. Our livelihood came from Plainfield. So I’ve always had an affinity to its history and what it could be.”
Queen City Coffee Roasters has been the talk of the town since its soft opening in September. “We were working out the menu and the decor, when some locals walked in, took some pictures and encouraged us to open that week. We didn’t even have pastries our first week,” wife Monica remembers.
Rest assured, Queen City Coffee Roasters gets daily deliveries from one of Monica’s favorite bakeries, Balthazar Bakery, from their time living in New York City. The café also serves fresh bagels to complement that bold morning cup or bright, citrus-like afternoon brew.
This isn’t your average coffee shop. Queen City Coffee Roasters offers specialty coffee, graded by experts to be world-class. The business imports its coffee as raw green beans directly from partner farms in Ecuador, Kenya, and other countries around the world. The coffee is roasted daily in-house so it is incredibly fresh. The shop welcomes the community to observe its roasts throughout the week.
Queen City Coffee Roasters also sells its beans wholesale to other specialty coffee shops and restaurants, mainly in New York City, with every bag boasting its roots with a signature ‘Roasted with Love in Plainfield, NJ’ badge.
Janajri’s passion for specialty coffee began over eight years ago. One of his early memories was learning about Kopi Luwak coffee on an excursion to Indonesia. He then visited coffee farms in Kenya and South America, experimenting with brewing methods like Pour Overs and Syphon.
We couldn’t be happier to have them as our own, and did we mention their coffee is amazing? The business is having its grand opening on Oct. 31, but is currently open 7 days a week, offering a limited but growing menu. Be sure to try the latte!
