LIVINGSTON, NJ – Color War broke in Livingston on Wednesday in celebration of Youth Appreciation Week (YAW). Donning yellow and green YAW T-shirts, children in grades K-2, participated in games of True and False and Musical Hoops, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., while children in grades 3-5, played Jailbreak, participated in relays that included three trips around the Dizzy Bat, Potato Sack Races, and Musical Hula Hoops, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The events were run by the Livingston Recreation Department and staff members of the summer camp program.

“That was so much fun,” said Liam Brosnan, who played for the yellow team in the older division.

“This is the second year we did Color War, said Corinne Olson, assistant program director for the Livingston Recreation Department. “This year, we added the younger kids’ division because last year we didn’t have many older kids sign up. This year, we had a great turnout and a lot of fun.”

“This is a great event to get kids up and moving together, and it is also a great way to bring the community together,” said Natalie Natale, special events coordinator at Livingston’s summer camp.

“It’s a great way to get friends who don’t go to school together participating in activities together,” said Lauren Salvatoriello, play director at Livingston’s summer camp.

Youth Appreciation Week Chairperson and former HCHY president Alan Karpas and those involved in Youth Appreciation Week’s events encourage the community to join in the many activities yet to come. Some of the events being offered to the community’s youth include Stuff the Bus, Mr. Ray children’s concert, LANCETalks, a Ga-Ga tournament, and a Movie Under the Stars. The Week will end with the annual Memorial Day Cole Bros. Circus and Memorial Day Parade.

“Kids are all a part of our future and I think it’s very important to reward them and honor them,” Karpas said. “That’s what Youth Appreciation Week is all about.”

Livingston’s Youth Appreciation Week, which was organized by the Healthy Community Healthy Youth Initiative of Livingston, Livingston Youth and Leisure Services, and the West Essex YMCA, will run through Memorial Day. Click HERE for a full list of events.
