MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The Columbia High School Cougars opening football game at home got off to a good start with Trey Harris Scoring on a 37-yard pass from quarterback Luke Hayes, and a successful point after the kick.

The first quester ended with the Cougars holding a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Newark Central’s Safee Venable scored on a 35 yard runback of an intercepted pass, and their kick attempt failed. Later, Syfee Campbell scored on a 10 yard run and again the point after attempt failed. The score at the end of the first half was Newark Central 12, Columbia 7.

The second half turned out to be all about Newark Central. They scored on an 85 yard kickoff return, followed by a 10 yard pass for the next touchdown and again on a 30 yard fumble return. The fourth quarter again saw Newark Central score on a 20 yard fumble return and the final touchdown on an 11 yard run.
