They have invited East Orange native son, Leroy Bennett, who has authored Welcome to the Hotel California, a novel which describes his five-year odyssey of living as a homeless person to come home for a book-signing event.  The story focuses on the stigma on those living in the streets, on the treatment of guest who live in shelters, the discrimination practiced on this population in securing employment, and the improprieties by some of the people who run the shelters and transition homes.

The Farmers Market is swiftly establishing itself as a community-building, community-defining and community-sustaining institution. Mark Cheatam, the facilitator of the market and organizer of the event remarks, “It (the market) provides opportunities for citizen involvement in food policy issues; promotes volunteerism; and serves as a civic forum regarding matters of importance to the community, like public health issues, community planning issues, political issues and other concerns such as homelessness. We hope that the residents available to support this effort.”
