NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – In separate resolutions at last night’s Borough Council meeting, the borough agreed to settle two long-standing tax assessment disputes with local businesses.
Council President Michael Gennaro said the borough would pay Murray Hill Inn Associates about $82,000 as a result of reduced assessments for the period 2009-2012.
The borough will also return about $38,000 to 691 Central Avenue LLCV for the 2011-2012 tax years.
Gennaro said the borough is responsible for its share of the refund as well as that of the Board of Education. Union County which receives about 20 percent of every local tax dollar will reimburse the municipality for its share of the tax refund.
Tax assessments and appraisals took center stage at last night’s meeting; three additional resolutions were approved by the Borough Council.
The council agreed to retain Timothy J. O’Connor to provide professional tax assessment services and to assist in added assessment inspections at an amount not to exceed $5,000.
The Value Research Group received a contract to provide professional property appraisal for an amount not to exceed $55,000.
Also receiving a contract for tax appraisal and consulting services was Hendricks Appraisal Company for an amount not to exceed $10,000.
In other actions, the council approved a $75,000 contract with L. R. Kimball for consulting services to implement a consolidated public safety communications center. The shared emergency dispatch center with the City of Summit will be located in the New Providence Municipal Center.
The joint emergency center will be governed by a panel consisting of officials from both towns. Gennaro, along with council agreement, recommended Councilman Rob Munoz to serve as the council representative to the board.
With last week’s snow storm still very much in evidence, the subject of snow removal was raised. Councilman Dr. Bob Robinson introduced a resolution to purchase a 3,000 gallon storage tank for brine which is sprayed on borough streets prior to a snow event.
“The brining process has proved to be very effective,” Robinson said. He added that during “nuisance snow events” of two inches or less the brining process eliminates the need for salting or plowing saving the borough a huge expense in manpower and materials.
Providing the council with a brief overview, Treasurer Jennifer Cronin of the New Providence Community Pool said that membership was gradually increasing after a drop of 20 percent two years ago with the opening of the Lifetime Fitness Center in Berkeley Heights.
Councilman Armand Galluccio urged residents to attend a pancake breakfast benefit sponsored by the Lions Club to raise funds for a borough youngster undergoing a cornea transplant. The event will be held at the William Paca Club on Sunday, March 3, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $10 per person or $25 per family.
Councilman Alan Lesnewich alerted residents to a “Day of Service” event to benefit local agencies and the Newtown, Conn. Fund. Local residents will have an opportunity to participate in several planned service events.
