HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — Citing security concerns and in an effort "to help the district and nation move toward unity during this difficult time," Rep. Chris Smith has shut down his Twitter account.
"Divisive and hate-filled tweets have become far too frequent and impede the healing so needed today," said Smith (R-4th District), who represents Belmar and Lake Como in Congress.
According to Smith's spokesperson, who did not cite specific language or threats made through Twitter account, "Congressman Smith continues to receive phone calls and emails from thousands of constituents freely expressing their opinions. His website and Instagram continue to provide the congressman's most recent statements on votes and legislation."
Smith's Facebook page also remains active.
