Congratulations, you have made it past the initial round of resume review and you are now scheduled for a face-to-face interview with a potential employer. Your nerves have kicked in and your mind is racing a mile-a-minute. What should you wear? How early should you arrive? What should I take with me? These might be just a few of the questions going through your head. Making a great first impression and having a successful interview is essential to nailing the job offer. Below are a few pointers to help you conquer the big day.
- Do your research. Before you go into the interview, make sure you have done your research about the company. Review the company’s website and research the person who will be interviewing you. LinkedIn, social media site is a great place to start. In addition, be prepared to answer questions such as “Why do you want to work here? Or “Tell me about yourself.”
- Arrive early. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to arrive for the interview. Factor in any traffic issues you may run into or delayed trains. Arriving with time to spare will show that the interview is important to you and that you’re punctual and reliable.
- Bring extra copies of your resume. Although you probably submitted your resume online or sent it in an email, do not assume your interviewer will come with it. Make sure to have a few extra copies on hand in case you need it.
- Dress appropriately. First impressions go a long way. Regardless of the company culture, make sure you are dressed in business attire. For women this means a conservative suit, moderate shoes, limited jewelry, and a professional hairstyle. For men, a conservative suit along with professional shoes, and a neat hairstyle.
- Clean up your social media sites. It has become a standard procedure for many hiring managers to check out your social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The last thing you want is an inappropriate picture that prevents you from getting the position. Make sure to keep your social media sites clean and private.
Going in for a job interview can be a bit daunting, especially if it is your first one. Make sure to do all the necessary preparations and research ahead of time and you will be well prepared.
