CORAL SPRINGS, FL – A man who allegedly hit a child took police on a pursuit in two cars, on a bike, and on foot through downtown Coral Springs late Tuesday morning until he was arrested on University Drive, police said.
The chase for the man – whose name has not been released yet – required Coral Springs police to lock down nearby schools, including City of Coral Springs Charter School, and encourage residents to stay indoors as officers followed him across neighborhoods.
The incident started around 11:30 am when the man allegedly hit a child who may have been his son or his girlfriend’s son in the 16100 block of NW 39 Street, said Officer Chris Swinson, spokesman for Coral Springs police.
After the attack, the man drove off in an Audi and, with an officer following him, the man crashed the car along Sample Road, Swinson said.
He then ran off, passing businesses on Sample Road until he ran into a neighborhood on NW 98 Avenue, where he tried to break into houses, he said.
The man eventually broke into a house in the 3700 block of 98 Avenue, where three people were inside. He fought with a man in the house and stole a Dodge Journey which he drove and crashed in a nearby dead-end street.
After that, with police in pursuit as well as a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter hovering overhead, the man stole a bike and rode it until he got off and was caught by officers.
No other information was immediately available.
