CORAL SPRINGS, FL – For an unknown reason, a man tried to burn down a Coral Springs house while a married couple in their 70s slept inside on Sunday morning.

Coral Springs police on Monday asked the public for help in identifying the man who was captured on a Ring camera walking up to a house on NW 113 Terrace in Cypress Run at 4:40 a.m., dumping gas in the garage area, starting a small fire, and then taking off.

“I have no reason why someone would want to do this,” said the couple’s son, Marc Schechter, who shared the Ring footage on social media across the region. “It’s just crazy.”

It’s the second time someone has sneaked up on the house in about three weeks, Schechter said.

A person broke a window in the house in the earlier incident before running off, he said.

Schechter said police told him that the two incidents are likely connected.

In the videos, Schechter said, the man who tried to burn down the house has a left forearm sleeve tattoo, purple, white, and black sneakers, razor-cut hairstyle, and is driving one of two cars: a possible white Honda sedan or a black SUV.

The fire didn’t cause much damage, Schechter said.

Since the pandemic hit, he said his parents have barely left a house they’ve lived in for close to 34 years. He said they haven’t had any visitors.

“They haven’t had any repairmen. No one. I don’t know why they were targeted,” he said.

Anyone with information on the suspect can call Coral Springs Det. Machelle Quinones Reinoso at 954-346-1228.
