Councilwoman Isabel Sousa is officially running for the First Ward Council Seat. She currently serves as the First Councilwoman and has brought a wealth of knowledge to the Council, including experience she gained from representing Roselle on the Union County Transportation Advisory Committee, serving as a trustee on the PeachBrook Condominiums Board, and participating in the First Ward Action Committee. Councilwoman Sousa’s knowledge of the work that goes into the role of a councilperson, accompanied with her 25 years of experience as a teacher makes her the right choice for First Ward residents.

Councilwoman Sousa has been an educator in the Elizabeth Public Schools for 25 years. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Kean University, a Masters Degree in Education, a Supervisor Certificate and an ESL certificate from various other colleges and universities. In all of her positions as a teacher, she has consistently supported, nurtured, and celebrated her students. Currently, as an English as a Second Language teacher, she dedicates herself to helping English language learners develop and succeed in our community.  “Teaching and learning remotely during the Coronavirus pandemic has been challenging, but as a school community, our teachers, students, and parents have made it work. It is an example that we can get through anything if we pull together.”

Councilwoman Sousa is a proud mother and Roselle homeowner. She understands how important it is for families to be able to raise their children in a beautiful, safe and affordable community. She is committed to advocating for the First Ward community and the Roselle at large community. As a Portuguese immigrant, she arrived in the United States with her family seeking the American dream. She understands the importance of a community that embraces everyone and believes her ability to communicate in Spanish and Portuguese allows her to bridge the gap with bilingual residents.

Councilwoman Sousa believes we shape our own destinies, and the decisions we make must be ones with consequences we can all live with and be proud of. She understands, more than ever, that working together gets the right results and moves Roselle forward, the Right Way Forward.  “We are facing difficult times, and we need leaders that will make decisions that have a positive impact on Roselle.  There has never been a more crucial time to choose the right person. We cannot risk our future with the wrong person in office,” says Councilwoman Sousa, “I will do the right thing for the First Ward residents and I will continue to help move Roselle forward.”
