PLAINFIELD, NJ — An update from the administration on Tuesday noted 91 new reported cases of COVID-19 in Plainfield since Friday, Jan. 15. One death was reported on Saturday, Jan. 16, bringing the total number of deaths in Plainfield in 2021 to seven. Plainfield Public Schools Nurse Myrna Dyson presented an overview of COVID-19 findings in the school district at the board's business meeting Tuesday evening.

Dyson said the school district is committed to keeping students, staff and the community healthy and safe during the pandemic. She said there is continual communication with Superintendent Dr. Diana Mitchell, Dr. Beth Filippatos and Sean Sutton.

Dyson noted both she and Dr. Mitchell often speak with Plainfield's Health Director Dr. Atif Nazir, and the Board of Health is kept abreast of workplace transmission within the district.

Within the Nursing Department, Dyson said, five district nurses have been trained and certified by the State of Jersey as COVID-19 investigators. They know how contract tracing is done, and work with guidance and social workers to assist with truant students who may need health guidance.

As members of Tier 1A, the nurses are also scheduled to be vaccinated this week. Teachers and employees in the district fall under Tier 1B, and a mass vaccination will be scheduled for this group, depending upon vaccine availability.

Since the start of the school year, 181 employees have been quarantined, and there have been 27 positive cases.

Plainfield Public Schools will sponsor a COVID-19 testing day on Saturday, Jan. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Plainfield High School cafeteria. The entrance is on Arlington Ave. All students, parents and community members are welcome to come for testing. Register in advance here.
