SUMMIT, NJ - For the Class of 2019, the Big Dance is still a few hours away. That big dance, for those who may be unaware, would be the Summit High School Senior Prom or, owing to its prominence, just Prom (really important things and people go by just one-word names).
The number-one seeded Hilltopper Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team decided to get the pre-party going early, opening their collective big dance -- the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 Tournament -- a day before the senior-centric soirée by taking on ninth-seeded West Essex on the Upper Turf Field. Finding their rhythm, Summit got in its offensive groove early and often, building an 11-goal lead at the half and jamming their way to a 21-7 win over the Knights.
Senior captains Anna Griffith (6) and Julia Szynal (4) combined for 10 goals, and junior Bridget Moriarty had a three-goal, three-assist day as The 'Top improved to 15-3 on the season. Summit now advances to the semifinals where they will encounter fourth-seeded Chatham in yet another edition of the River Road Rivalry.
Senior captain Katia Carnevale (2), sophomores Rileigh Meyer (2), Anna Gohring, and Breanna Carnevale, along with freshman Kit Zanelli and Maggie DeFabio all found the back of the net. Sophomore Diana D'Onfrio (3) and junior Sarah McGhee (1) combined for four stops in goal.
Molly Simon (2G, 1A) and Lindsay Fusco (1G, 2A) each had three-point games for the Knights.
Versus West Essex, the Hilltoppers bolted out to a massive 14-3 lead by the halftime break and, while the teams still had 25 minutes to play, Hilltopper Nation could turn their attention to a return tilt with the Cougars. Summit won 10-7 at Chatham in the second-game of the season on March 30.
Summit will host Chatham on the Upper Turf Field on May 20. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
