KENILWORTH, NJ - The David Brearley High School Football team is 5-0, more than half of their regular season is over, but they are taking it one week at a time. Coming off of a 39-0 win over Manville, Coach Scott Miller and his players are staying focused on the principles.
Miller comments, "We approach the season the same way regardless of where we are at. We focus on getting better every week, if we continue to get better as a team every week then we should be prepared for our upcoming opponent."
He notes that some of their toughest games that ended in wins for the Bears include a 28-14 close win against Belvidere and another win against Roselle Park, 20-10.
With a strong veteran group of Seniors that have been playing together for three years, Miller says that their experience is paying off during their final season.
One of those Seniors is seventeen year old Erik Loneker, who is 6'5" and lines up at right tackle and defensive tackle each week.
Loneker who is a three year starter comments on his final season as a David Brearley Bear, "What makes this season special is that all the hard work and all the conditioning leading up to the season is starting to pay off."
He also contributes the team's success to Miller's leadership, adding, "Coach Miller believes in us and would never put us in a position where we wouldn't be successful. He knows that we can win and accomplish our goals not only as a team but individually as well. It's definitely nice to know that our coach has so much confidence in us."
The team has just four regular season games left, next up Pingry at home this Friday, Oct. 16. But, just like his coach, Loneker isn't thinking about the end just yet and taking it one game at a time, he comments, "We approach the second half of the season how we approached the first half, everyday is a blessing. We focus on one week at a time. We don't take any team easy and we have to perform day in and day out to get better everyday. This type of foundation is what creates a winning season and I'm proud to be a part of it."
