SPRINGFIELD, NJ - Jonathan Dayton Bulldogs returned to action yesterday, as the team took on the lower back nine of the historic Baltusrol Golf Club.

The course was in terrific condition despite the amount of rain that had fallen earlier in the day. The element that challenged the golfers was the heavy winds and gusts that blew throughout the round.

Coach Dave Campbell said, “Walking to a tee box I saw a bench that was knocked over. My first thoughts were that maybe the kids were goofing around and I was just about to get into teacher mode. Once I put the well-constructed bench upright, a terrific gust blew and knocked over the wooden bench once again. The wind was really strong.”

The Bulldogs knew they were in for a tough challenge. Westfield is one of the best teams in the county. The hope was Jonathan Dayton would compete against a short-handed Ranney team. Ranney was able to beat Jonathan Dayton 203 to 209.

Jonathan Dayton needs to have a 60% winning percentage in order to qualify for the North 2 Group 1 State sectional tournament to be held on May 13 at Newton Country Club.

Coach Campbell said, “We have our work cut out for us now. For us to qualify now we will almost have to be perfect-winning the matches we would be favored in and having to pull an upset or two.”

“Our team is young and talented," he continued. "But we have to develop the consistency needed. I'm glad the kids got to see an excellent Westfield team handle the same conditions much better than we did.”

Aiden Forys(50), Matt Zeman(52), BrettNetkin(53), Jeremy Greiss(54) Sarah Roderick(62) and Noam Brooks(65) were the top 6 golfers of record for Dayton.

A highlight for Jonathan Dayton was the 55 scored by sophomore alternate Jordan Berkowitz.  Berkowitz shot a 64 at Baltusrol two weeks ago.  His play announced that he intends to challenge for the team’s sixth spot.

“He earned an opportunity to play today,” Campbell said.

Westfield announced that they are a serious player for the upcoming conference, county and state sectional tournaments. Westfield's team score was 161.  George Snell(37), Jason Lee(40), Colin Summers(42), Thomas Smith(42), Jarrod Orioli(42), and Nick Conti(44) carded terrific scores.
