Public Art Project installed in Madison
This spring, the sidewalks of Madison have been transformed into a dynamic and stunning art gallery showcasing vibrant artwork created by thirteen immensely talented New Jersey artists. After a very successful inaugural event in 2013, the Madison Sidewalk Gallery has returned – bigger and better than ever thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Madison Arts & Culture Alliance (MACA) and the Downtown Development Commission (DDC).
The sidewalk gallery is designed to help promote the creative work of local artists, and to recognize Madison as a premier arts destination. This exciting public art project connects artists with communities, enhances public appreciation of art and enables people to find art, culture and creativity everywhere they turn. It is our hope that we can provide everyone with opportunities for surprise, delight, creative participation and easy access to the arts.
Each of the artists who participated in this project created two original paintings on 30” x 40” canvas banners displayed on specially designed lampposts that have been installed throughout downtown Madison. These art banners add color, depth, and life to the streets and will remain on exhibit through the fall. At that time, the banners will be removed, and prepped for public auction—affording the public an opportunity to purchase and own one of these original works of art. The Gala Auction event is scheduled for Friday, October 17 at the Madison Hartley Dodge Memorial. The event will include refreshments, music, a meet-the-artist reception and a chance to purchase these highly collectible pieces of original artwork by some of New Jersey’s most sought after artists at auction. More details about the gala will be forthcoming shortly.
The participating artists in the 2014 DDC/MACA Sidewalk Gallery are: Medy Bozkurtian, Danielle Auriemma-D’Amico, Dan Fenelon, Susan Gepford, Tine Graham, Amy Thompson Hill, Chris Kappmeier, Sally Lebwohl, Maria Lupo, Gail Marfdin, Daniel Marck, Dennis McKee and Kris Pfeifer.
The Madison Arts & Culture Alliance (MACA), is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit coalition of arts organizations, cultural institutions, historic societies, colleagues and friends, dedicated to encouraging collaborations among the wide ranging cultural offerings in Madison. Their ongoing mission is to help strengthen our community through arts participation, recognizing that Madison, New Jersey is a town with rich and diverse cultural activities.
The Downtown Development Commission (DDC) was initiated by Mayor Elizabeth Baumgartner and the Borough Council in October of 1981, following a study by Projects for Public Space, funded through a Dodge Foundation Grant. The DDC is focused on coordinating redevelopment activities in the downtown district to foster a closer working relationship between all segments of the Madison community. The group works closely with the Chamber of Commerce, Historic Preservation Commission, Madison Arts & Culture Alliance and other groups to enhance the beauty and ambiance of Madison’s shopping areas.
