SUMMIT INTERFAITH CANDLELIGHT VIGIL TO REMEMBER 26 VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE ON 1ST ANNIVERSARY OF NEWTOWN SHOOTINGS

 

When4-5 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013

 

WhereCentral Presbyterian Church, 70 Maple St., Summit

 

What: Local interfaith clergy, Union County’s sheriff, the mother of a child killed on a local playground & others reflect briefly on the toll of gun violence. Music by a children’s choir. Vigil ends with a group candle-lighting, remembering all killed by gun violence. 

 

Who: Speakers include Rev. Vanessa Southern, senior minister of The Unitarian Church in Summit; Ralph Froehlich, Union County Sheriff; and Samuel Arnold, president of the Garden State Funeral Directors Association. Music by children’s choir of Summit’s St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church and others.

 

Vigil Sponsors: Summit Interfaith Council; NJ Million Mom March Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence; NJ Residents for Action Against Gun Violence; and Friends Against Violence Everywhere (FAVE).

 

History: The anniversary vigil remembers the 20 first-graders and 6 educators shot to death on December 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The shooter also killed his mother and himself.
