Democrat Mayor Glover Endorses Gov. Christie

August 14, 2013 at 6:20 PM

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – In a surprise move Wednesday, Scotch Plains Mayor Kevin Glover, a Democrat, announced he was supporting Republican Governor Chris Christie’s run for reelection during a campaign stop in his town.

“The Governor has shown tremendous support for me and my staff since I took office,” Glover said. “I was most impressed by his response before, during and after Superstorm Sandy.  He put aside partisan politics and worked with the President and said ‘we need to fix this’.  I think this leadership earned him the right to a second term.”

Governor Christie arrived at an unexpected spot when his SUV pulled up outside John’s Meat Market, when the majority of the crowd was waiting for him outside the Highlander.

After greeting Vincent Losavio, owner of John’s Meat market and his staff, the Governor walked down Park Avenue, talking with residents and business owners along the way, signing autographs and shaking hands.

The crowd included many supporters of two-year-old Scotch Plains resident Vivian Wilson, who is waiting for changes to medical marijuana laws to be able to receive treatment for a rare seizure disorder.  The crowd carried placards and called out to the Governor to sign the new bill into law.  The Governor acknowledged that he heard them, but did not comment on whether or not he would sign the bill into law.

The Governor arrived at the Highlander, walked through, paused for a few minutes to talk with Vivian's father Brian Wilson and at the rear entrance stopped for an impromptu press conference where Mayor Glover officially gave his support to Gov. Christie.

“I know the mayor endorsed the Governor, but did the Governor endorse the mayor?” questioned Councilman Bo Vastine following the short press conference outside the Highlander.

The Democrat Party was silent on this unexpected turn of events with no formal acknowledgment or comment coming from the local Democratic Committee.
