DENVILLE, NJ – Recently the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) released the 2017-2018 School Performance Reports. These reports compare 2017-2018 data with previous year’s data, and information collected from other schools across New Jersey. Areas examined include academic achievement and student growth derived from the 2018 PARCC Assessment, PARCC participation rates, and chronic absenteeism. Denville schools met or exceeded 100% of the schoolwide targets and goals, and the Summative Rating Scores for Lakeview and Riverview Schools were in the top 1.5% of all public elementary schools in New Jersey.
Lakeview met 100% of the schoolwide academic performance and growth targets in math, and exceeded the standard in English language arts (ELA). Notably, Lakeview students are in the “Excelling” range for academic performance in ELA and student growth in both math and ELA. These scores combined with high attendance rates, earned Lakeview School a State Percentile Ranking of 97.57.
School highlights included hosting the 25th annual Veteran’s Day program with an additional performance at the Morris County Courthouse, students performing 5,000 acts of Kindness in 15 days, and recognition as a New Jersey State “School of Character.”
Riverview met 100% of school academic performance, student growth, participation and attendance targets. Notably, Riverview is in the “Excelling” range for academic performance and student growth in ELA. The subgroup of students with disabilities exceeded the standard in ELA student growth. These indicators earned Riverview School a summative percentile ranking of 97.51.
School highlights included being named a New Jersey State “School of Character”, and the 2018 National Winner for Promising Practices in Character Education from Character.org.
To continue striving for success in 2018-2019, both elementary schools focused on improvement in math for all students. Several interventions were put in place to assist teachers in transitioning to the expectations of the New Jersey Learning Standards and assist students in improving identified skill areas. An instructional math coach provides ongoing classroom professional development. The Reflex Math program has been added for additional fluency support. The Student Success Academy offers after school extension in reading, writing, and math through fun and engaging classes.
Valleyview met 100% of the schoolwide academic performance and student growth targets in both English and math. Students are in the “Excelling” range for meeting/exceeding expectations in English. The subgroups for Hispanic students scored just below the target for student growth in ELA and students with disabilities narrowly missed the target in math. The PARCC participation rate was 97.8%, meeting the state goal. Notably, 96% of the students enrolled in honors geometry met or exceeded the standards on the PARCC exam. The state average for this measure is 30%.
Although there were no designated “Needs Improvement” indicators for Valleyview, staff identified a need for improvement in general math. A full-time math coach continues to provide support and professional development for staff. The curriculum was revised, new textbooks were purchased, and common benchmark assessments were created and administered three times during the year. Students in need of additional assistance were identified and provided a targeted program through an additional basic skills course, and after-school homework help. Quarterly monitoring of fact fluency and math content knowledge for all students is in place to determine if students are progressing on grade level.
School highlights include a 1:1 Google Chromebook initiative, seven high school courses offered, and a schoolwide Social Emotional Advisory Program.
