SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – On Monday, February 25, 2019, the Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey (ATSNJ) honored Senator Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr. with its 2019 Presidential Award.
“As an avid sports enthusiast, Senator Diegnan has always been a stalwart supporter of the different avenues, including legislation, to improve and protect the athlete’s health and safety,” said Christina Emrich, Past-President of the ATSNJ. “We honor his sponsorship and his trust.”
A two-time recipient of the award, Senator Diegnan has worked with the ATSNJ to advance athlete health and safety legislation. Since his original sponsorship of New Jersey’s 2010 landmark concussion law, he has continued to support athletic trainers as frontline medical professionals, whose treatment befits not only high school and college students, but also patients in other clinical settings. Senator Diegnan is currently sponsoring a package of legislation to protect student athletes from heat exhaustion, brain injury, and sudden cardiac events. “There is nothing more important than protecting our young people,” said Senator Diegnan.
At the awards ceremony, Senator Diegnan extended his congratulations to outgoing president, Christina Emrich, and extended his best wishes to the incoming leadership team, led by Kevin Briles and Jessica Springsteen, adding that he “remains committed to working with Kevin and Jessica to keep New Jersey at the forefront of national student athlete health policy.”
