The "On Your Marc" run and walk will be hosted on Aug. 2. Lower Providence residents can get a discount until Tuesday (July 22) of next week. Read below for more on the race, courtesy of a June 2 article on TAP Into Lower Providence:
Ideally, residents of Lower Providence Township spent last Monday enjoying their freedoms, thankful for the persons that paid the ultimate price for those abilities. Perhaps you spent it grilling at a barbecue or swimming with friends, but no matter what you did on your day off, remember the reason for the day off.
Memorial Day is designed to remember those that passed away in the line of duty. While Veterans’ Day is for all, Memorial Day was aimed to remember that some gave their lives for the freedoms of others.
Lower Providence has one such veteran in Marc J. Small. Small, a staff sergeant who gave his life while fighting in Afghanistan is remembered each year with the annual “On Your Marc” 5K run and walk.
“He was a special forces medic serving with the United States Army,” said Small’s sister and founder of On Your Marc Megan MacFarland. “His unexpected passing has been a tragedy to our family, but we know he would have wanted us to continue his memory in positive aspects.”
To that end, the foundation was formed six years ago. On Saturday, Aug. 2, at 8:30 a.m., the organization will host its sixth annual race. Registration for the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Lower Providence Fire Department in Eagleville. The running race begins at 8:30 a.m., with the walk kicking off at 8:35 a.m.
Funds raised by the event go to Small Steps in Speech, a foundation that Small’s own fiancée, Amanda Charney, created to “assist children with communicative disorders.”
“Since its inception five-and-a-half years ago, On Your Marc has raised over $164,000 for Small Steps in Speech in order to help children with the ‘small steps’ needed to improve their speech,” said MacFarland.
The race invites even the furry members of the family with “Doggie” registrations, allowing leashed pets to attend the walk and run. Teams may also register together. Children ages 6 and younger may participate for free.
To register, residents can click on the Lower Providence Township homepage here, and click on the “On Your Marc” link.
Killed in action in 2009, Small gave his life so that others could be free. His family hopes that residents of his hometown, Lower Providence, will get involved in remembering him.
“Please join us,” said MacFarland. “Have fun, and help out this important foundation.”
