WEST ORANGE, NJ - "Discover West Orange," the new local television program hosted by township Historian and author Joe Fagan, will premiere on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. on Channels 36 and 45.
Sponsored by the Downtown West Orange Alliance, the show is a half-hour program featuring main stories combined with a variety of invterviews, historical topics, pictures and surviving artifacts. The premiere episode pays tribute to West Orange's Veterans, focusing on the history of the War Memorial Park located in front of Town Hall, 66 Main St. Fagan's guests will include: Gary Englert and Elmer "Sonny" Ciamillo.
Englert is the former Director of the Division of Veteran's Affairs, and former Chairman on the the Commission of Military and Veterans Affairs. He is also a Vietnam veteran who has spearheaded the Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Town Hall since 1999. And, he also organized the yearly Veteran's Day Ceremony. As a result of Englert's efforts, West Orange holds the unique distinction of being New Jersey's most decorated community.
Ciamillo worked for the township of West Orange for 53 years. Now retired, Ciamillo was aboard the USS Massachusetts that fired the first shot of WWII. He was also aboard the ship in the South Pacific that was sunk by the first Japanese Kamikaze pilot of the war suring the battle of Leyte Gulf. Ciamillo will describe his amazing story of survival and subsequent rescue by a Navy pilot who dropped a life raft as the ship sunk.
