SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Jeff Lake Camp and Lake Bryn Mawr Camp will be presenting guest speaker Dr. Robyn Silverman to discuss “How Media Messaging Impacts Our Kids and What We Can Do About It” at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m.
“The messages that girls in particular get on magazine covers and the role models presented on television shows tell girls that it is all about their looks and not about their brains and not about what they do,” said Camp Director, Jane Kagan.
Dr. Silverman will be offering tips and takeaways to help parents combat those negative messages. She has been featured regularly on The Today Show, Good Morning America and ABC Nightline.
“We have always wanted to be able to bring camp outside of just the two-month period we are in session,” said Kagan. “At the same time, we have wanted to do something educational and something that would provide good information to parents in the community.”
Dr. Silverman was a camper at Jeff Lake herself and reconnected with the camp when she was looking at camps for her own daughter. Since then, Kagan has had her work with campers, staff and parents, and feels her insights will be appreciated by the community.
The event is free to attend and does not require registration. Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel is located at 432 Scotland Road, South Orange; (973) 763-4116.
