'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' Campaign in Effect Through Labor Day

August 25, 2014 at 10:29 PM

FANWOOD, NJ -- The Fanwood Police Department is among dozens in New Jersey participating in the 2014 “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through Monday, Sept. 1.  Local and state law enforcement officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated.

Fanwood is one of 40 Central Jersey police departments awarded grant monies for the campaign sponsored by the Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

"The goal is not to make arrests, but to keep the residents of Fanwood safe and to also educate residents on the hazards of drunk driving," said Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo.  "As summer comes to a close, many people celebrate Labor Day weekend with parties. I encourage everyone to have a designated driver who will not be drinking alcohol."

With safety in mind, Chief Trigo offers the following advice:

• If you plan to drink, before going out designate a driver who will not be drinking alcohol.
• If necessary, spend the night where the activity is held.
• Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. Drivers may dial #77 to report a drunk or aggressive driver.
• Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It is your best defense against an impaired driver.
• If you become intoxicated, the safest way to get home is to take a cab, or have a sober friend or family member drive you to your doorstep.

“More than 10,000 people are killed in the U.S. each year in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Drunk driving is reckless and preventable,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety.  “During this campaign police agencies in New Jersey will be sending a clear message. If drivers are caught driving impaired they will be arrested.”
