PATERSON, NJ- A member of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office was transported to and treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital after the patrol car he was in was struck on Friday.

According to a statement by Passaic County Sheriff Richard H Berdnik the incident happened at approximately 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Rosa Parks Blvd.

The report states that the driver of a Volkswagen Beetle convertible ran a red light, striking Officer Jason Michaels in the rear of his patrol car. After being struck the officer’s car went up on the sidewalk and hit a US Postal mailbox and a parked vehicle, causing his the vehicle to become disabled in the area of Madison Avenue and 12th Avenue, while pursuing the suspect.

The PCSO located the unoccupied vehicle a short time later just two blocks away and after a brief investigation apprehended Carlos Carrillo Ruiz, 41, of Paterson charging him with Aggravated Assault, Assault by Auto resulting in Bodily Injury and Eluding police.
