Eagle Scout Awards Presented in Millburn

SHORT HILLS, NJ - Since 1945, Boy Scouts of America Troop 17, chartered through St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Short Hills, New Jersey has had 99 young men attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

On Thursday evening, June 12, Troop 17 concluded their scouting year in celebratory fashion by awarding 8 young men the highest advancement award the Boys Scout of America offers to a Scout, the Eagle Scout Award.

“Tonight was very special for our Troop and these young men should be very proud, as only 4 percent of all Boy Scouts attain the Eagle rank. Each of these scouts earned at least 21 merit badges and successfully completed a community service project to earn his Eagle.”, according to Ken Fineran, Scoutmaster.

They join other outstanding American citizens who have also become Eagle Scouts, among them former President Gerald R. Ford, Jr., astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, and cinematographer Steven Spielberg.Scoutmaster Ken Fineran proudly presented each of the following scouts their Eagle during a Court of Honor ceremony.

·        John William Collas, age 16, son of John and Anne Collas, of Millburn has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was the facilitation of community collection drive program of new and gently used footwear for Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization based in Tennessee.

·        Daniel Dyer, age 15, son Daniel Dyer and Cathy Russo-Dyer, of Short Hills has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. His service project was the re-vitalization of land for a community garden behind a new home recently purchased by St. Rose of Lima Church of Short Hills, New Jersey.

·        Andrew Carlos Lama, age 17, son of Salomon Lama and Christine DeLoughry-Lama, of Millburn has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was the establishment of community outreach program to provide recycling awareness and coordinate the recycling of thousands of plastic snack bags.

·        Richard Jack Longenecker, age 16, son of Rick and Deborah Longenecker, of Maplewood has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was the coordination of community art and school supplies donation program for the benefit of La Casa de Don Pedro in Newark, New Jersey.

·        Peter Saudino, age 16, son of Matthew and Elaine Saudino, of Short Hills has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. His service project was the installation of a rope barrier fence in the public garden of Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills, New Jersey.

·        Andrew Tham, age 16, son of Philip and Ellen Tham, of Short Hills has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was a community recycled glasses collection program for the benefit of New Eyes – glasses for those in need of Short Hills, New Jersey.

·        Benjamin David Warco, age 16, son of David and Kimberly Warco, of Short Hills has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was the construction of a pair of cold frame greenhouses at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum in Short Hills, New Jersey.

·        Calvin Leonard Wetmore, age 16, son of Douglas Wetmore and Catherine Delesky, of Short Hills has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  His service project was the construction of five small bat houses/exhibits at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum in Short Hills, New Jersey.
