NEWARK, NJ - Registered voters in Essex County will be able to cast their ballot at two early voting locations rather than one this year in order to meet increased demands.
The Hall of Records on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Newark has always served as an early voting facility. This year, an additional early polling location is available in West Orange.
The Turtle Back Zoo Education Center Building in the South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange will serve as the additional early voting location now.
There are about 14,000 more registered voters in Essex County this year compared to 2017, state data show. There are about 506,000 registered voters in Essex County. Last year, there were about 492,000.
The number of registered Democrats in the county comes in at about 260,000, compared to about 50,000 registered Republicans, according to the state Division of Elections. There are about 193,000 unaffiliated registered voters in the county.
All Newark residents will vote for one United States senator, a congressman, county executive, surrogate and sheriff. Some Newark residents in the West Ward will also be able to cast a ballot for the uncontested Board of Chosen Freeholders seat for District 3.
Newark voters will also decide if the Newark Public Schools board of education members should be appointed by the mayor or be elected by residents.
All voters in New Jersey will be asked if they want to allow the state to borrow $500 million to give schools grants. If approved by voters, $350 million would go to county vo-tech schools and school security, $100 million would go toward school water infrastructure projects, and $50 million would be used for county colleges.
A sample ballot for Newark residents living in the county’s District 3 can be viewed below.
