SOUITH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Monroe High School shortstop Casey Scheida hit a long game-winning single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to thwart a late East Brunswick rally, and give the Falcons a thrilling 3-2 victory over East Brunswick High School in the finals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Softball Tournament.
A two-run throwing error in the top of the sixth inning had allowed the Lady Bears to tie the game 2-2 after the Falcons grabbed the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Cindy Foresta.
This was a pitchers' duel, as Lady Bears pitcher Lauren Assennata and Monroe star pitcher Kelly Widener really battled each other throughout the game. The outcome was up for grabs until the fateful seventh, when the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs before Scheida's winning hit.
The rematch comes this afternoon, May 27, when the undefeated Falcons (26-0) and Lady Bears (22-3) square off one final time in the semifinals of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 Softball Tournament, with the winner advancing to the finals and a chance to advance to the state tournament.
