East Orange Campus Jaguars Capture Essex County Relay Title Behind Flanagan, Davis, Taylor-Amica and Poole

January 27, 2014 at 7:40 AM

EAST ORANGE, NJ – Junior Jermaine Flanagan, Seniors Haji Davis, Joseph Taylor-Amica and Freshman Cory Poole led the East Orange Campus Jaguars to the 4 X 400 meter relay title and a fourth-place team finish at the Essex County Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Jersey City Armory.

Taylor-Amica also finished second in the 200-meter dash (23.05), second in the 400-meter dash (51.95), and third in the 55-meter dash (6.76) while teammate  Davis finished second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.95) and sixth in the 400-meter dash (53.85).

Joseph was astonished when he was informed by coach Lance Wigfall (whose retired track and field jersey is showcased in the gymnasium at East Orange Campus High School) that he had accomplished something that Wigfall never achieved in the Essex County Track and Field Championship by placing in every event he competed in. “Wow, it is a real honor to have one up on my coach, but I have much more work to put in if I ever want to be as good as he was”, said Joseph.

Davis was asked how it felt to be the runner up in the hurdles and he replied "This was my first time running the hurdles in the Essex County Championships and I was somewhat nervous” said Davis. “I know I can run faster and could have won, but I hit the third hurdle and lost focus, which threw my rhythm off completely”.

Wigfall had nothing but praise for the Jaguars. “Before we exited the bus to compete, I asked the team to try their best to score at least 8 points as it was another track and field meet that we did not score in last year” said Wigfall.  “After the first event, all I could do was smile because we had scored 9 points. That set the tone for the remainder of the meet. East Orange Campus High School was not built in a day so the entire coaching staff will be preparing to come back to work on Monday and continue to place emphasis on the goals we set at the start of the season; have fun, work hard, and perform better than last year".
