EAST ORANGE, NJ - Residents of East Orange packed Calvary Baptist Church on Monday to participate in the East Orange Clergy’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration. Attendees young and old from all across the city populated the church auditorium.
Most notable among the celebrants was Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, State Senator Nia Gill, Mayor Lester E. Taylor and East Orange City Council members Honorable Quila Talmadge (Council Chair), Honorable Sharon Fields (4th Ward) and a host of local area pastors and lay-leaders.
Youths from the City of East Orange Recreation Department served as greeters, hosts and assistants to seniors in need of care and direction. The E.O. Cheerleaders created a short cheer dedicated to Dr. King as part of the days festivities.
Rev. Dwight Gill, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in East Orange gave the keynote address; reminding the congregation to return to those principles and practices that have maintained the African-American community for decades and Dr. King instituted during his lifetime.
