PATERSON, NJ - The Eastside High School boys basketball team handed national power St. Anthony of Jersey City its first loss of the season in a battle of unbeaten teams on Sunday.
The Ghosts of Eastside came away with a 49-48 victory over the Friars to extend their record to 6-0. St. Anthony had won its first four games before falling to Eastside.
Asem Johnson was the leading scorer for Eastside with 18 points, and he also came up with two steals and passed for two assists. Shakur Juiston led the Ghosts in rebounding with eight to go with 11 points and six assists. Juiston's foul shot with 28 seconds left snapped a 48-48 tie.
Ahmad Dauda scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
And, although he did not score, forward Marquel Sheffield had a profound effect on the game with his interior presence. Sheffield grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots for Eastside.
Tarin Smith of St. Anthony finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.
After falling behind, 12-8, after a quarter, the Ghosts erupted for a 22-9 run in the second quarter to take a 30-21 lead.
