PRINCETON, NJ - Former Atlantic Health System (AHS) Trustee Robert E. Mulcahy III was named 2019 Health System Trustee of the Year by the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA). The Trustee of the Year honor, one of the Healthcare Leader Awards bestowed annually by NJHA, recognizes outstanding volunteer hospital and health system trustees for their commitment to patients and communities.

As an AHS Trustee from 2004 through 2017, Mulcahy helped the organization maintain a singular focus on quality, whether in the area of patient safety, program offerings or the financial health of the system.

Always a vocal patient advocate, Mulcahy made it his mission to ensure that the AHS Board always viewed opportunities and challenges through the eyes of the patient. Perhaps that’s because the well-being of AHS communities is in his blood – Mulcahy’s mother was a nurse at Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center, where Bob was born.

“Bob embodies the very best that healthcare has to offer, in that he cares so deeply about doing the right thing and putting our patients first,” said Brian Gragnolati, President and CEO, Atlantic Health System. “He spent a long and fascinating career in public service building relationships and bringing people together, and has spent more than a decade at AHS putting others before himself. I congratulate him on this much-deserved recognition.”

Along with serving on the AHS Board of Trustees, Mulcahy served on its committees for governance and medical staff leadership and development. He was chairman of Overlook Medical Center’s Community Advisory Board for six and a half years, where he was integral in the development of Atlantic Neuroscience Institute, a center of excellence in the delivery of cutting-edge care for stroke, brain tumors, and other movement disorders.

In addition to his service at Atlantic Health System, Mulcahy is Chairman of Georgian Court University’s Board of Trustees and serves on many boards across the state, including Chairman Emeritus and Member - Board of Governors, Cathedral Healthcare System, Newark, New Jersey; President Emeritus, Tri County Scholarship Fund, Diocese of Paterson; past member, Board of Governors, New Jersey Historical Society; Past member, Board of Trustees, Delbarton School, Morristown, New Jersey; Member, Board of Governors, Baltusrol Golf Club and past member, Diocesan Finance Council, Diocese of Paterson.
