NEWARK, NJ — The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an apparent suicide that occurred in the Bloomfield Police Department overnight.
The preliminary investigation indicates that retired Newark Police Lt. Patrick Montella shot himself in the Bloomfield headquarters while being processed.
Montella, 58, of Bloomfield, was arrested for an alleged act of domestic violence and was expected to be released on a summons. He then shot himself, according to authorities.
He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:16 a.m. today, January 16.
The investigation is active and ongoing. No other information is available at this time.
