Essex County Prosecutor's Office Identifies Suspect in Shooting of Newark Police Officer

Easterling has been arrested in the shooting a Newark police officer and charged with  robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Credits: ECPO

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Donald Easterling, 26, of Newark, has been identified in the shooting of a 19-year veteran of the Newark Police Department.

According to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable, Easterling has been charged with robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Bail was set at $250,000.

On July 30, the officer responded to a robbery in progress at a Newark bodega in the 300 block of Clinton Avenue.

The officer was shot in the leg and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Easterling was also shot during the confrontation and both were hospitalized at University Hospital. The suspect has been released from the hospital and is currently incarcerated at the Essex County Correctional Facility. The officer has also been released from the hospital.
