UNION, NJ - A large excavator was ablaze when Union firefighters arrived to a work area at the Garden State Motel site Wednesday afternoon.

According to Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio, at about 4:00 p.m., firefighters arrived at 1650 Route 22 east to find a large excavator in flames.  Since the machine's hydraulic lines were compromised, Scanio said, both water and foam was used to fully extinguish the fire.  The excavator was in the process of tearing down the existing buildings of the old motel to make room for new development.

Personnel from the Union County HazMat team were requested as a precaution.  The fire was under control within 15 minutes, Scanio said.  No injuries were reported.
