NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Facebook recently announced it is changing its news feed and algorithms so that news from legitimate publishers and posts from businesses will seldom appear.
This will be frustrating for people who use Facebook to find news and information relevant to them, said TAPinto Founder and CEO Michael Shapiro.
“Relegating legitimate news publishers and businesses is a lose-lose-lose,” Shapiro said. “Citizens will be less informed and involved in public affairs and their local economies. Publishers and businesses that invested significant resources in developing their social media presences have no recourse.”
The third loser, he noted, is Facebook itself. “Facebook lost nearly 5 percent of its stock value since announcing the change,” Shapiro said.
He is urging TAPinto readers to take action so they no longer rely on Facebook. “There are many ways to receive your local news that are independent of Facebook,” Shapiro said.

“Publishers and local businesses now know who their true friends are - - the members of their local communities - - not Facebook, and should act accordingly,” Shapiro said.
He said publishers “should focus on impactful local news reporting while local businesses should partner with local publishers to market themselves, providing valuable exposure for the local business while providing resources to the local publisher to cover the important local news in our communities.”
While Facebook’s decision to marginalize legitimate local news is “unfortunate,” Shapiro stressed that TAPinto’s network of 70 local news sites will continue to gain readers. “It will not deter TAPinto in our mission to provide objective, non-partisan local news and information 24/7 for our 7 million readers,” Shapiro said.
