Fanwood Council Presents Thelma Southers as Volunteer of the Month

FANWOOD, NJ - Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr and the Borough Council presented Thelma Southers as the Volunteer of the Month at its meeting on Tuesday. Southers has lived in Fanwood since 1969 and has sat on the Board of Health for the last 10 years.

“Thelma is a pharmacist by trade and had the training that went along with sitting on the Board of Health," Mahr said. "She served many years for the International Ladies Garment Union and their 26,000 members. She has contributed greatly to the betterment of Fanwood.” 

Councilman Dan Levine reported that the Board of Health, along with the Westfield Regional Health, is offering health screenings. Fanwood residents can participate in the many free or low-cost screenings, including hearing, cholesterol, glucose, hemoglobin, bone density, and mammography. The community's new radio station is up and running and can be heard at 530 AM. The joint emergency radio station will broadcast announcements of road closing and public safety messages. Councilman Russell Huegel said, “The Rescue Squad is in charge of it, Captain Tom Kranz will take messages.”

Councilman Anthony Parenti offered a reminder that Fanny Wood Day will be held Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Martine and South avenues. There will be more than 100 exhibitors, festival foods and live entertainment.

Applications for bulk waste pickup are currently being accepted. The deadline is Sept. 2. The cost is $65 for a one-time pick up of 750 pounds. Applications can be found on the borough website at Pickup on the north side of Fanwood is Sept. 16 and the south side is Sept. 23. Brush pickup on the north side is Sept. 3 and on the south side Sept. 9.

Also posted on the website are details and maps regarding the municipal parking lot reconstruction that began this month.

Councilman Kevin Boris mentioned that the Recreation Commission is starting an information drive on a skateboard park. They will have a booth at Fanny Wood Day to answer questions. There is currently a website:
