July 12, 2014 at 12:04 AM

SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ -- The 2014 YMCA National Gymnastic Championship meet was held in Tampa, Florida, from July 1 through July 5, 2014.  The meet was declared an official “Olympic Day” event by the US Olympic Committee.  Seven gymnasts from the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA competed at the meet and were excited to be a part of the festivities.

The opening ceremonies were held at the Tampa Buccaneers Stadium.  The gymnasts’ grand entrance included parading across the stage and being broadcast on the “Jumbotron” above the stands and then onto the field surface.     During the ceremony, FSPY gymnast Heather Mullen was presented before the crowd, having been awarded a $1,000 Scholarship from the Y-USA.   The scholarship criteria are very stringent, and, it was quite an honor for Heather to have received the recognition and scholarship.

Kacie Bumiller represented the FSPY team in the Championship Division.  After two days of competition, Bumiller found herself in the top 10 in the nation on Vault and, thus, qualified to compete at Finals.  She is the first gymnast from the FSPY team to qualify for finals since 1995.  Bumiller placed 9th in the nation on Vault after Finals.  Bumiller also placed 11th All Around.
