David Nigro’s winner in the second session of extra-time propelled the locals to a 2-1 victory over FC Mulhouse Portland in the NPSL semifinals on July 28, to send the Celtics to the Final.
To advance this far into the tournament, FC Motown had to navigate some close calls. In the regional final against the New York Cosmos B squad, the locals hopped out to a 3-0 lead but had to hold on after surrendering a pair of goals in stoppage time.
In the conference finals a week earlier, they needed a 90th-minute equalizer against West Chester United – a squad they had defeated twice in the regular season – to keep their dream alive.
