September 15, 2013 at 1:59 PM

FANWOOD, NJ - A fire late Sunday morning caused extensive damage to a home on Washington Avenue and caused the home owner to be transported to the hospital with burns to her hands.

The blaze at 1118 Washington Ave., one block from Kramer Manor Park, began on the second floor of the split-level structure in the area of the bedroom, according to firemen on the scene, shortly before noon. Fire and rescue personnel from eight neighboring communities responded to the blaze.

Fire and rescue assistance was provided by Fanwood, Westfield, Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, Springfield, Cranford, Garwood, Clark and Scotch Plains, as well as the Union County Mutual Aid Coordinator.

"The owner of the home and two animals were in the house at the time," said Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo. "Two police officers escorted the woman out of the home, by which time it was engulfed. The home owner suffered burn injuries to her hand and was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital (in Livingston) by the Westfield Rescue Squad."

No other injuries were reported, and the fire was under control within an hour and a half of being reported. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
