CALDWELL, NJ - After several serious fires at the beginning of this year - notably the Gould Place Fire on Jan. 23 - the Caldwell governing body voted unanimously to support the creation of the Caldwell Fire Prevention BureauCaldwell Fire Chief Gary Garamella announced Tuesday that the bureau is now officially opened and will be located at Caldwell Fire Headquarters, 30 Roseland Avenue.

"Effective Tuesday, the Borough of Caldwell officially took over as the local enforcement authority for the fire code which previously was done by the NJ Division of Fire Safety," Garamella commented.

The responsibilities of the local enforcement authority will include the following:
  • registering and inspecting life hazard occupancies
  • issuing fire safety permits
  • investigating fires
  • responding to complaints
  • coordinating fire prevention education programs
The move is expected to bring revenue into the borough to offset operating expenses, as it has in other communities. Councilman Pasquale Capozzoli commented at a recent council meeting that “bringing in more money to the borough is great, but the decision to do this is about safety, not money. This is our town, the state did a great job but we need a local person to have boots on the ground when and where we need him. We need to have local control over enforcement.”
The Fire Prevention Bureau office will be opened Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
